We are a group of interested relatives of those British, NZ, Canadian and Australian allies who spent time in this Schweidnitz POW camp during WWI. In particular, we are interested in gathering information on the escape of 24 men on the night of 19th March 1918 and other aspects of camp life. The men were eventually recaptured and sent to the notorious Holzminden POW camp until repatriation after Armistice.

Introducing our 24 Escapees…….. a photo montage

Without further ado I'd like to introduce ‘our 24 Escapees’ from Schweidnitz POW camp.

The tunnel escape occurred on the evening of 19th March 1918 from Schweidnitz POW camp Germany . As you will see they had a diversity of backgrounds and varying skills to offer the escape plan. Let’s say skills may have been gained in previous attempts of themselves and others. The escape and the aftermath will be documented in a future blog.

Photos are supplied  from various relative’s collections (thank you Margaret Clarke and Chris Nobbs)  and sourced from various military accounts plus  Ancestry trees.

Each man will have a story on this blog…. Some are already there. Happy to have you reading along. We know you'll come to love these faces and their stories.

"They being prisoners of war at Schweidnitz, of having banded themselves together and by means of united effort forcibly undertaken to break their way out"
